See you in 2023 The Mezzalama Trophy Foundation cancels the XXIII edition.

After the appointment of Alex Brunod, mayor of Ayas, as the new president of the Mezzalama Trophy Foundation, it was agreed to wait a few days before deciding on the immediate future of the “Marathon of the Glaciers”.
During the course of a meeting held on Thursday 21 January, a decision no-one would ever have wanted to announce was taken.
«So soon after being elected - said Alex Brunod – this was a difficult decision for me and the other members to take. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much choice: due to the current state of the pandemic we’re forced to cancel the edition number 23».
«In view of the situation – Brunod went on – confirming the date would have been too much of a risk, both for the athletes and all those who put so much passion and hard work into making the Mezzalama Trophy happen.
We would have had to go on working without knowing exactly how the situation was going to evolve. Also, it’s hard to imagine that we could ensure that all the necessary restrictions were properly applied and that we could guarantee social distancing».
«We are really gutted - the Foundation’s president concluded – but we’re convinced we have made the right decision, because now all our energy is projected positively towards the future. It is this concept of resilience that sport, and ski mountaineering, teaches us. We’re going to concentrate on the youngsters in the immediate future, with the idea of organising a summer event as soon as the situation allows, and are confident that in 2023 the Mezzalama Trophy will be back again with a fantastic edition».
The event’s technical director, mountain guide Adriano Favre, is also saddened by the decision: «In the last 12 editions of the Mezzalama Trophy - Favre said - we have had to tackle adverse weather conditions, cold, snow, wind, postponements , but we’ve never had to call it off. Unfortunately, this situation is out of our control.
Taking a decision now, without waiting any further, was necessary.
«We are going to look to the future – said Favre – and turn our attention to quality events. Before the next edition of the Mezzalama Trophy, we will be focusing our organisational efforts - thanks also to Dynafit, with whom we been collaborating successfully for many years - on young international ski-mountaineers».
